HISTORY | |||||||||||||
| History In 1821 the population of the Caledon to was just 100 people,
but by 1857, the Belfountain area had a population of 200 people. The majority
of people were of Scottish and Irish descent. They immigrated to Canada for religious
freedom and the hope of owning land. Thus it was important for them to come together and worship God. The first group of believers gathered in homes in the year 1835. By the year 1889 the congregation had grown so that a building was needed. Since the quarrying of the beautiful stone was big business, the Belfountain Village Church was built with that stone. Stone from nearby quarries was used for the new Church on land donated by Mr. Andrew McLaren. This same stone was used in the construction of the Ontario parliament buildings in Toronto. The corner stone was laid September 1889. On November 3, 1889, the Church was opened for worship by Rev. Donald Grant of Montreal, who had ministered to the congregation earlier in 1882. The Church was now the focal point of the community. The new addition, constructed in 1985, was architecturally designed to complement the classic style of the stone building. It is named "Reid Hall" after the Rev. Hugh Reid. Rev. Reid delivered his sermons in both Gaelic and English in 1859. It must have been heartwarming to those people, often lonesome for dear ones in the old land, to hear the message of God in their mother tongue - in fact, the Belfountain Village Church and the Belfountain Village Store are considered to be such historically significant buildings, that Mr.Cullens from the Weall & Cullens Garden has duplicated these two buildings in his miniature village. Please join us in "His" praise
